Himalayan Balsam Invasion

Regan is co-supervising a PhD with Drs Julia Sanchez Vilas, Pablo Orozco-terWengel, and Hefin Jones at Cardiff University. A highly invasive annual herb, Himalayan balsam, native to the Himalayas and introduced to UK in 1839, is now considered a serious problem, particularly in riparian habitats. The project will use field surveys, greenhouse experiments, and lab work to study how Himalayan balsam outcompetes native plants. In particular, the project will look at allelopathy, where Himalayan balsam poisons its neighbours.
